Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction

High severity Professional Only to diagnose

What P0740 Means

The torque converter clutch, which locks the engine and transmission together at cruising speed for better fuel economy, isn't engaging or disengaging correctly.

Common Causes

  • Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid
  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Wiring fault to the solenoid
  • Worn torque converter

Symptoms You Might Notice

  • Shuddering or vibration at cruising speed
  • Higher than normal RPM at highway speed
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Check engine light on

What to Check First

  1. 1

Check transmission fluid level and condition first

  2. 2

Test the torque converter clutch solenoid

  3. 3

If fluid and solenoid check out, the torque converter itself may need inspection by a transmission specialist
