P0716

Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

High severity Professional Only to diagnose

What P0716 Means

The transmission's input (turbine) speed sensor, which tracks how fast the input shaft is spinning, is sending a signal outside the expected range.

Common Causes

  • Faulty input speed sensor
  • Damaged or corroded wiring/connector
  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid affecting internal sensor performance
  • Internal transmission wear (less common, more serious)

Symptoms You Might Notice

  • Harsh, delayed, or erratic shifting
  • Transmission may enter a protective 'limp' mode
  • Check engine or transmission warning light on

What to Check First

  1. 1

Check transmission fluid level and condition first

  2. 2

Inspect the sensor's wiring and connector for external damage

  3. 3

A transmission specialist will typically need to test the sensor with dedicated equipment, since it's usually mounted inside the transmission housing
