What P0087 Means

P0087 indicates that fuel rail pressure is reading lower than the PCM expects, on an engine with a high-pressure direct or common-rail fuel system. The fuel pressure sensor mounted on the rail feeds a live pressure reading back to the ECU, which constantly adjusts the high-pressure fuel pump (and, on some systems, a fuel pressure regulator) to hold the target pressure needed for proper atomization and combustion. When actual rail pressure falls meaningfully below that target for a sustained period, the PCM sets P0087. Because modern direct-injection and diesel common-rail systems depend on very high fuel pressure — often several hundred to well over a thousand PSI — to atomize fuel properly, a real pressure shortfall doesn't just hurt performance, it can lead to poor combustion, excess unburned fuel, and potential damage to the high-pressure pump or injectors if run for long periods. This code is treated as high severity for that reason.

  • Failing high-pressure fuel pump unable to build or hold target rail pressure
  • Clogged fuel filter restricting fuel supply to the high-pressure pump
  • Weak or failing low-pressure (in-tank) fuel pump starving the high-pressure pump of fuel
  • Fuel rail pressure sensor giving an inaccurate low reading despite normal actual pressure
  • Leaking or stuck-open fuel injector bleeding pressure off the rail
  • Contaminated fuel or debris lodged in the pressure regulator or pump inlet

Can I still drive with a P0087 code?
