P0016

Crankshaft Position — Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1, Sensor A)

High severity Hard to diagnose

What P0016 Means

The engine control module has detected that the crankshaft and camshaft are out of their expected timing relationship — meaning the engine's valve timing doesn't match where the crankshaft actually is.

Common Causes

  • Worn or stretched timing chain
  • Faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor
  • Timing chain tensioner failure
  • Incorrect installation after recent timing work

Symptoms You Might Notice

  • Rough running or difficulty starting
  • Rattling noise from the timing chain area, especially at startup
  • Loss of power
  • Check engine light, often flashing

What to Check First

  1. 1

This is a serious mechanical concern — avoid extended driving until checked

  2. 2

A mechanic will typically check timing chain stretch and sensor readings with a scan tool that can show live timing correlation

  3. 3

If the timing chain has stretched, it usually needs replacement along with the tensioner and guides

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep driving with this code?

It's not recommended. A timing correlation fault can mean a stretched timing chain, and if it skips further, it can cause serious engine damage (bent valves on many engines). Get it checked as soon as possible.
