The National Vehicle Registry (VREG) is an interconnected system linked directly with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to ensure that proper import duties have been paid before a vehicle can be legally registered or insured in Nigeria.
By using the VREG portal (vreg.gov.ng) or its dedicated USSD shortcode, buyers, agents, and verification officers can input a vehicle's VIN (Chassis Number) to pull up its legal import status, duty payment confirmation, and lifecycle history. It effectively bridges the gap between customs clearance at the port and vehicle registration at the state level.
In the Nigerian Market
Before VREG was implemented, the Nigerian car market was plagued by the "Oluwole" (fake document) syndicate. Dealers would smuggle cars through the Cotonou border, print fake customs papers in Lagos, and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. VREG has made it significantly harder to register smuggled vehicles, making it the most powerful tool a buyer has to verify a car's legal standing.

Common Misconceptions
Some buyers think VREG is just for new vehicle registrations. It is actually a lifecycle database that also holds accident history, insurance data, and ownership records, making it useful for Nigerian Used cars as well.

A vehicle that easily clears a VREG check sells at full market value. A vehicle that fails the check is essentially unsellable on the open market and must be sold at a massive loss to underground buyers.
