What It Means
When a vehicle has suffered an unrepairable accident, massive fire damage, or has been abandoned for so long that the chassis has rotted away, it is reduced to "scrap" or "iron money."
At this stage, the car is no longer evaluated based on its brand, mileage, or features. Instead, it is sold to metal scavengers or recyclers (often operating out of massive salvage yards like Owode Onirin in Lagos). The buyers strip out any remaining useful parts (like the alternator or catalytic converter) to sell individually, and weigh the bare metal chassis to buy it as raw iron.
In the Nigerian Market
For a car owner, selling a vehicle as scrap is the ultimate last resort. It is a painful realization that a car that was once worth millions is now only worth its weight in steel. However, the Nigerian spare parts ecosystem relies heavily on scrapped vehicles to provide cheap, locally sourced replacement body panels and bolts to keep other cars running.
How It's Used
"The mechanic said the engine and gear are dead, and the floor is rusted. Just sell it for iron money and cut your losses."
Buyer's Tip
If you are buying a car that looks incredibly cheap, check the structural frame and the floorboards. If the chassis is heavily compromised by rust or a severe crash, no amount of mechanic work will fix it. You are buying scrap.
Seller's Tip
Before selling your dead car to a scrap metal buyer, remove valuable components yourself. Sell the battery, the catalytic converter (Indomie), the alternator, and the alloy wheels separately. You will make significantly more money than selling the whole car as raw metal weight.
Common Misconceptions
Many people hold onto dead, unrepairable cars in their compound for years, thinking the value will go up. In reality, the metal rusts and depreciates further. It is better to sell it for iron money immediately than let it rot.
Effect on Price
A scrap car has zero automotive market value. It is priced per kilogram of metal. Depending on the size of the vehicle (sedan vs. SUV), an owner might only receive between ₦80,000 to ₦250,000 in total.
