Direct Tokunbo

A freshly imported used vehicle that has recently arrived from the port and has absolutely no Nigerian driving or registration history.

What It Means

While "Tokunbo" generally refers to any imported vehicle, "Direct Tokunbo" specifically emphasizes the absolute freshness of the import. It means the car has just been cleared from the port (like Apapa, Tin Can, or PTML) and is sitting on a dealer's lot waiting for its very first local owner. It has never been registered with Nigerian license plates or driven on local roads.

Because the car has not faced Nigerian potholes, adulterated fuel, or roadside mechanics, it is considered the purest and most desirable form of a used car in the country. However, buyers must be aware that "Direct Tokunbo" does not guarantee the car was not involved in an accident abroad; many of these cars are imported as salvage vehicles and repaired before hitting the lot.

In the Nigerian Market

The term is heavily used in Lagos and Abuja car dealerships to justify premium pricing. Because the cost of clearing cars at the port is tied to the dollar exchange rate, a Direct Tokunbo is highly susceptible to forex fluctuations. When the Naira weakens, the price of Direct Tokunbo vehicles spikes almost instantly.

How It's Used

"I don't want anything that has been driven here. Show me your Direct Tokunbo options only."

Buyer's Tip

Do not let the shiny exterior of a Direct Tokunbo blind you. Always run the VIN through Carfax or AutoCheck to see the state in which it was exported. Many "Direct Tokunbo" cars are accidented vehicles that were cheaply repaired upon arrival in Lagos.

Seller's Tip

If your car is genuinely a clean-title import, provide the foreign history report (Carfax) alongside your customs clearing papers. This proves the car is not just freshly imported, but imported in good condition, allowing you to charge a premium.

Common Misconceptions

Many buyers believe Direct Tokunbo means the car is completely flawless. In reality, it only means the car hasn't been driven in Nigeria yet. It could still have severe mechanical or flood damage from its country of origin.

Effect on Price

Direct Tokunbo commands the highest price tier in the used car market, often selling for 30% to 50% more than an exact equivalent that is Nigerian Used.
