Border Car (Cotonou)

A vehicle smuggled into Nigeria through land borders (typically from Benin Republic) without paying official import duties at a recognized seaport.

What It Means

Before strict border closures, thousands of vehicles entered Nigeria through the Seme and Idiroko borders from Cotonou. These "Border Cars" were usually older or lower-grade vehicles driven across the bush paths by smugglers to entirely evade the Nigeria Customs Service. They have no SGD, no Assessment Notice, and no legal standing.

In the Nigerian Market

The Nigerian government frequently organizes customs strike forces that patrol highways and raid car lots looking for Border Cars. If caught, the vehicle is impounded immediately, and the owner faces severe financial loss. Buying a Cotonou car is a high-risk gamble aimed at securing a cheaper vehicle.

How It's Used

"The price is very attractive because it is a Cotonou border car. It has a license plate, but no customs duty was paid on it."

Buyer's Tip

Avoid Border Cars completely unless you are prepared to undergo the complex, expensive, and sometimes impossible process of regularizing the duty with Customs yourself. The initial savings are never worth the anxiety of driving a smuggled vehicle.

Seller's Tip

If you are stuck with a Border Car, look out for official Customs "amnesty" windows where the government allows owners of smuggled cars to pay their assessed duties with minimal penalties to obtain legitimate papers.

Common Misconceptions

Many people believe that if a Border Car manages to get registered with the FRSC and has a valid plate number, it is safe from Customs. This is entirely false. Customs retains the right to seize the vehicle at any time if the original duty cannot be proven.

Effect on Price

Border Cars are sold at a massive discount—often millions of Naira below market value. This steep price drop reflects the immense legal liability the buyer is taking on.
