Apapa Port Demurrage

Penalty charges levied by shipping terminals and customs authorities when a vehicle is not cleared and removed from the port within the allotted free days.

What It Means

When a vehicle arrives at Nigerian seaports (like Apapa or Tin Can), the importer is given a brief grace period to process the SGD, pay duties, and physically drive the car out of the terminal. If documentation is delayed, port congestion prevents exit, or there are issues with the customs valuation, the vehicle begins to accrue daily demurrage and storage fees.

In the Nigerian Market

Demurrage is a silent killer of auto dealer profit margins. Because of the notorious inefficiency and gridlock around Lagos ports, cars can sometimes be trapped for weeks. These accumulated fines are eventually bundled into the total "Clearing Cost" and passed on to the final retail buyer.

How It's Used

"I had to add ₦300,000 to the asking price because my clearing agent delayed the Form M, and the car racked up heavy Apapa Port demurrage."

Buyer's Tip

If a dealer justifies a sudden price hike on a pre-ordered vehicle by claiming "demurrage," ask to see the official terminal receipt. Do not blindly absorb penalty costs caused by the dealer's inefficient clearing agent.

Seller's Tip

To avoid eating into your profits, ensure your clearing funds and bank documents are fully prepped before the vessel berths. Factor a small buffer for port delays into your initial pricing strategy.

Common Misconceptions

Buyers often think the vehicle price is fixed the moment it lands. In reality, port delays can add hundreds of thousands of Naira in demurrage fees, unexpectedly altering the final landed cost.

Effect on Price

High demurrage fees directly inflate the final retail price of Tokunbo cars. When the ports are heavily congested, the market average price for freshly imported vehicles rises universally to cover these overheads.
