Motorcycles change hands informally in Nigeria more often than cars do, from personal bikes to commercial Okada, but a sale still needs a signed record for the buyer to register it and for the seller to stop being liable for it once it's gone.
There's no dedicated government form for a motorcycle sale the way there is for the change-of-ownership notification itself — the agreement is a private contract, sometimes called a bill of sale, purchase receipt, or deed of transfer. What matters is what it contains: full names, addresses, phone numbers, and valid ID (NIN, driver's licence, or international passport) for both seller and buyer; the motorcycle's make, model, year, colour, engine number, chassis number, and plate number if registered; the agreed price in Naira; the date and place of handover; and a clear statement that the seller has good title, free of liens. An "as is" clause covering the bike's condition after the buyer's own inspection is standard, and both parties signing — ideally with a witness each — is what gives the document weight if a dispute comes up later.
Once signed, the seller notifies the authorities of the transfer using Form MVA 5, and the buyer takes the agreement, alongside their ID, the previous registration, insurance, and a roadworthiness certificate, to complete the change of ownership at the state Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and update records at the Central Motor Registry — a process increasingly handled through the e-CMR portal.
Commercial Okada sales carry extra risk worth flagging. Cloned or altered engine and chassis numbers are common enough that a pre-sale check against CMR or police records is worth the time, and some northern states have restricted or banned commercial Okada use and sale outright, which can affect whether a transfer even goes through. Skipping the witness signatures, leaving the chassis number off the agreement, or failing to notify the MVAA within 30 days of the sale are the most common ways these transactions go wrong — the missing chassis number in particular is what usually gets an application rejected, since it's the one detail that ties the paperwork to the physical bike.
A signed sale agreement, plus a chassis-number check before payment, is what keeps a motorcycle purchase from turning into a dispute over ownership or a stolen bike later.
